Winners of Planning Awards 2018 announced

The winners of the 2018 Planning Awards, which reward excellence in town planning and placemaking, were announced at a ceremony in London on Wednesday 6 June.

The awards, organised by specialist title Planning and sister website PlacemakingResource, span 11 categories in planning and 14 in placemaking, plus the overall Editor’s Award.

As well as rewarding excellence in planning practice, the Planning Awards also celebrate outstanding work in broader placemaking activities including regeneration, economic development, urban design and sustainable and community-led development.

The winning entries were revealed at a ceremony at London’s Savoy Place presented by broadcaster and comedian Ayesha Hazarika.

Re (Regional Enterprise) Ltd our joint venture with Barnet Council were finalists in two categories; Planning for the Natural Environment and Local Authority Planning Team of the Year.

Whilst we were not successful in one of the categories, we are delighted to have been awarded ‘Local Authority Planning Team of the Year’ for our Planning Enforcement team.

In 2016-17, Barnet issues 100 planning enforcement notices against harmful developments. The council was responsible for more than eight per cent of all enforcement notices issued in England that year and was the first London planning authority to use the Proceeds of Crime Act to confiscate earnings from landlords found guilty of planning offences.

The category judges praised ‘an enforcement team that has embraced the importance of service improvement in an unsung area of planning that is important to public faith in the system’.

Winners and shortlisted projects were chosen by an expert panel of judges, made up of 25 senior figures from across the planning and placemaking sectors.
